Understanding GPTs: from generic fluff to specialized assistants & the GPT Store
The power of specialization, community and examples.
Have you ever felt that your ChatGPT response is just so plain and ordinary? 🥱 Perhaps you started wondering what this fuzz is all about? Things change with GPTs (Generative Pre-Trained Transformers), which are adding flavors to the Generative AI space. Plus, there’s a new candy store around the corner.
In this post I’m briefly explaining what the GPTs are and why they matter. I’m also sharing some GPT examples you can use, including mine. In the next post, I’m diving deeper into the GPTs I’ve created for you.
What are OpenAI GPTs?
GPTs are “custom versions of ChatGPT that you can create for a specific purpose”. Imagine not just an ordinary barista, but a coffee expert selecting the right beans and the right method to make your cup of coffee ‘wow’ - unique and just as you like it ☕. GPTs can be your coffee expert. They are tweaked to specialize in a specific context and perform a specific role.
Two aspects of GPTs make them very noteworthy to me: specialization and community.
The Power of Specialization
Specialization means less fluff and more relevant responses for specific use cases.
How it works:
Custom Instructions - each GPT is programmed with unique instructions to excel in a particular area, like education or copywriting. This turns them into a template for a conversation - making your chat more relevant and cutting time on getting started.
Specialized Data - they can be trained on data specific to their task, as simply as with uploaded files, or with APIs and external sources.
User Customization - users can create their own GPTs and train them just by talking to them. They can be tweaked and customized further once published.
The Power of Community
Custom GPTs democratize the GPT development. Anyone without coding skills can become a developer, share their GPTs with other users and even monetize them through the GPT Store 🛒.
The GPT store will do for AI what Appstore did for mobile phones, turning them into accessible powerful computers anyone can carry in a pocket.
GPT store means more developers unleashing more creativity through more GPTs. Will all of them be amazing? Absolutely not. The lower the entry barriers the more volume and the bigger the haystack, not to mention the challenges.
Still, I believe you will be able to find many fascinating needles in this haystack. OpenAI bet big on the community too stating that “the best GPTs will be invented by the community”.
New tools, old risks
One more thing: the GPTs do not make the typical ChatGPT problems go away. You still can expect hallucinations, errors, privacy and quality challenges. And even though the GPTs were “built GPTs with privacy and safety in mind”, be mindful which GPT you chose to interact with. GPTs using APIs to connect to an external app might send your personal data to a third party 🔓.
